It’s nearly summertime and you’re looking for jobs, but there are hundreds of other students applying for the same opportunities. You may be asking yourself why you didn’t start your search sooner, and what can you do now to catch up and stand out amongst the competition. Here are some resume tips and networking tips that can help you make an impression on potential employers.
When creating or updating your resume, it's important to include only relevant information that showcases your abilities and experience in a clear, concise manner. Make sure to proofread your resume multiple times before sending it off; typos or grammar errors will certainly not make a good first impression. Additionally, consider including volunteer experience, extracurricular activities, or projects you’ve done that demonstrate skills related to the job you're applying for. This shows employers that you have more than just work experience; it shows them that you’re driven and willing to go above and beyond what is expected of you.
Networking is key when looking for summer work as a student. Connect with people who may have insights into job postings or internships that aren't widely advertised yet. Attend career fairs, join professional organizations in your field of interest, or attend industry-specific conferences if possible—these events give you an opportunity to meet with recruiters from various companies face-to-face and get your foot in the door. Once you have met someone new, don't forget to follow up with them afterwards via email or LinkedIn so they remember who you are!
Finding summer work as a student can be challenging due to the sheer number of applicants looking for the same opportunities as you. However, by making sure your resume is polished and comprehensive while also being mindful of networking opportunities around you, such as career fairs or professional organizations, you will help stand out from other candidates vying for the same position! Best of luck!
